I'm going plant-based_With Cass

Hey Guys,

Welcome back to my blog.
If this is your first time reading my blog.
Welcome to the blog.
I will be starting a plant-based diet. "Let's just take a moment". This is something that I've thought about for 8 months now, and finaly decided that I'm going to do it. Let's take a step back into the past and then, I will talk about why I'm doing this.

Growing up my family never did the whole dieting thing. We had a mixture of meals we ate but, nothing specific towards a certain plan. I've never been on a strict  diet or eating plan. There was a time in my life where I tried to eat clean or so I told myself, that was an on and off situation for about 2 years. So other than that this will be my first strict diet.

If you are not formilier with a plant-based diet. A plant-based diet is when the majority of your food consists of plants like fruits and vegetables. When doing a plant-based diet the diet also includes grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Sometimes there are a few or no animal products in the diet, it just depends from person to person.

There is just a small description of what the diet is. I will be doing no animal or dairy products and I'll be cutting out all sweet things aswell. I really want to put my all into this diet from the start to the end. My main goal is to do it for 6 months, the diet will start on the 1st of September untill the end of March. I will be blogging about this and be sharing weekley to monthly updates. Make sure to follow me on Instagram and twitter to see my daily updates and things that won't be in the blogs.

The whole month of August I will be preparing  myself for the diet, by eliminating all the things I will not be eating throughout the diet. I will be going from eating veggies 2 - 3 times a week to 3 times a day. I am also going to be working on my workout routine, where I will be going from 15 - 20 min workouts 3 - 5 times a week to 20 - 45 min workouts 5 - 7 times a week. I know that it's going to be a huge change but I believe I can do it.

During the month of August I'm also testing out some plant-based and vegan recipes to see what works for me and what doesn't. I just want to get a few go-to recipes and have an idea of how it is going to be. During the 6 months I will still be trying out new recipes.

Plant-based diets has so many health benefits. It helps in the following; lowers your risks of strokes, diabetes and heart diseases, it has also shown to help with some mental illnesses. This diet can also help to lower your blood pressure and also help to improve your good cholesterol. It can also keep your brain strong. The plant-based diet can also help your risk of obesity.

I will be doing a follow-up blog on what I have prepared for my first month.

Our start to a self-sufficient garden_With Cass Week 3

Hey Guys,

Welcome back to my blog.
If this is your first time reading my blog.
Welcome to the blog.

I am Cass.
In the last few weeks we started cleaning and fixing up our greenhouse. We planted a few different veggie plants. We also planted potatoes outside of the greenhouse, if you haven't read last weeks blog you can go and read it here:
I'm so glad to say that our greenhouse is starting to look so amazing with all the veggie plants. This week we had a slow week there were lots of cold day's. I really do not like planting when it is so cold. Usually on those days we spend most of our time inside, folding small little seedling boxes we plant in, we use quite a lot. I will do a blog about the paper boxes and all the seedlings.

This week we started off by planting lettuce, we bought a few lettuce seedlings trays from a plant nursery. I have sowed lettuce seeds but, it's going to be a while until they are ready to harvest. That is why we got lettuce that is almost ready for harvesting.
These are mixed butter lettuce. These are one of the lettuce types we use a lot. We have planted them in old bath tubs, that we have from doing renovations.

We have also planted some strawberrie plants. We will definitely be planting a lot more strawberries. I have planted some strawberry seeds, some of them have already germinated in a few weeks. I will show you guys how they look.
When my grandparents first moved into this house. My grandmother had this rock bedding built, she always had flowerd growing there. The last few years she hasn't been planting there. So I decided that I am going to plant all kinds of veggies there.
As you can see there are a few beddings and all of them are different sizes. The veggies that I will be planting there are as follows; cauliflower, spinach, strawberries, some beans and kale. I'm thinking about planting some climbers as well. I will just have to workout the spacing.

I've decided that I'm going to plant onions all around the garden. Onions have a strong smell, that helps to keep bugs away. I regrow the onions from the onions we use in the house.

At the moment we are busy taking down all the 2L bottles that are hanging from the greenhouse roof. We are going to fix them and put new potting soil in them. We are also busy covering all the plants with leaves. You will see those photo's in next weeks blog.

Our start to a self-sufficient garden Week 2

Hey Guys,

Welcome back to my blog.
If this is your first time reading my blog.
Welcome to the blog.

I am Cass.
In last week's blog we started our journey towards a self-sufficient garden. We replanted all our spinach plants, we also planted beetroot. You can go and read that blog; Here
This week we started of by planting radish. I planted the radish the same as the beetroot. I firstly planted the seeds in a small container and replanted them into the ground. For radish this process took about 10 days. I've found that radish germinates really quickly.
We planted the radish in-between the spinach. Radish grows quick so they wont be in the way of the spinach. As you can see in the photo's, I've covered the radish with crushed leaves. It helps protecting the seedlings against the cold.

About 6/8 weeks ago we sowed our first batch of seeds. This week we planted the first 30 spinach seedlings, there are a lot more to plant in the next few weeks.

The new spinach seedlings are the following; baby spinach, fordhook giant, canary yellow and giant noble. Next week we will be planting more spinach outside the greenhouse.

We have about 50 potato sprouts. We will be planting all of them. We have decided that we are going to build a bedding with bricks. As the potatoes grow we can add soil over them and add more bricks, then when it's time to harvest we can remove the bricks  easily.
This is our first bedding we've built in there, we have 18 potato plants. Each plant carries about 4-10 potatoes. We will be building more bedding's for the other potatoes next week. We have to fill the soil up every 2-3 day as the plants grow.

In this week Sam also fixed some of the garden boxes. The wood that was used to build these boxes came loose and broke, so she had to replace the missing pieces.

We've also spent a few days folding small seedling boxes and getting all the seeds ready that we want to plant. At the end we will have about 4000 seedlings.

That's it for this weeks garden blog. Next week we will start planting more plants out side of the greenhouse.

Cass's star plate Episode 1

Hey Guys,

Welcome back to my blog.
If this is your first time reading my blog.
Welcome to the blog.

I am Cass.

This is our 1st episode of Cass's star plate. I really hope you enjoy and love this blog as much as I do.

Breakfast

Once in a while I treat
myself with this amazing
breakfast which includes
Muesli, strawberry yogurt,
blueberries, and raspberries.

• Blueberries are considered as a Super food, they are also high is potassium and Vitamin C.

• Raspberries are one of many fruits with are low in calories, they are a good choice when you are dieting.

• When eating muesli regularly it will help to improve your heart health, it also helps to improve your metabolism.

• Yogurt is a dairy product which is high in calcium and protein.

This muesli, yogurt and fruit breakfast bowl is a must. If you're like me eating something healthy always helps you to feel more motivated and ready to take on the day.

Lunch

Toasted cheese, tomato and cabanossi.

Toasted sandwiches are a next level
lunch in our home;

You would think that making toasted sandwiches would be one of the easy lunches to make. In our household it is not, it's a very serious lunch. It's always toasted to perfection. I use a cast iron plate on the gas stove to make the toasties. You can use a normal toaster or a pan to make toasties in as well.

• To get crispy toast all you need is butter. I only use butter to make them. Remember there is a difference between butter and margarine.

• A special ingredient to making mouth watering toasties is Homemade bread. Believe me when I say making the bread is really worth it.

• Cabanossi has a strong smokey flavor with a soft dry skin. It's main ingredient is smoked pork.

• Something that we do differently is we add the tomatoes to the toasty at the very end when you're toasty is done. That just gives it a different taste. It's worth the try.

Dinner

Sometimes all you need is a
hearty beef stew

Stew is one of our go to dishes to make on cold days. Sometimes as a Sunday lunches. The thing I find the most exciting is when making stew is that 6-8 hours wait until the food is ready and you can finally eat. For me it is such an accomplished feeling.

• When you're stews sauce is to watery you can take some of the sauce into a cup and add a little bit of flour mix it , then and the mixture back to the stew this will help to thicken the sauce.

• Some great herbs to use in beef stew is Oregano, basil, Rosemary and Parsley.

• Stew can be served with a variety of different side dishes such a Rice, potato-Mash and bread.

Snack time

There's just something about pizza
balls that make them the perfect snack.
These bacon and cheese pizza balls
are the bomb !!

There are endless filling options for these pizza balls. Here are some ideas; Spinach&Feta , Bacon&cheese , Salami&cheese, tomato&mozzarella, chicken-mayo, cheese-ham&pineapple, cheese, garlic&Mushrooms, and the list go's on.

• Here is the recipe I used for my pizza balls.

• There are two ways you can make pizza balls. Deep fry them in oil for a more crispy ball, oven bake them to get the pizza effect.

• Mixing herbs into your pizza dough gives it a burst of flavor.

Something sweet

Honeycomb is a sweet sugary
treat with is easy to make

• Honeycomb is basically a 3-4 ingredient treat witch can be kept in a airtight container for up to 2 months. I've heard that you can freeze them for 3 months.

• This treat is great to do with kids, because of the reaction between the baking soda and sugar.

• You can also replace half of the syrup with Honey if you want the honey taste.
